Your hotspot is running, customers are connected, and business is moving. Then suddenly, your internet speed drops, your ISP starts restricting your connection, and your customers begin complaining. Sound familiar?
With ISPs implementing Fair Usage Policies (FUP), hotspot owners face a growing challenge: managing data consumption without compromising customer experience or business revenue.
But here's the thing: You don't always need to buy more data. You need to manage the data and network resources you already have more intelligently.
In this guide, we'll show you 3 practical XenFi features that can help you control customer bandwidth, set individual voucher data quotas, and distribute users across multiple MikroTik routers.
Let's get into it.
1. Control Customer Speeds Using Package Speed Limits
One of the simplest ways to manage bandwidth consumption is by controlling the internet speeds assigned to your customers.
Without reasonable speed limits, a few users consuming large amounts of bandwidth can increase your network's overall data usage, particularly when streaming, downloading large files, or using bandwidth-intensive applications.
XenFi allows you to adjust download and upload speeds directly from your package settings.
How to Set Speed Limits in XenFi
Open your XenFi dashboard.
Tap the menu icon (three vertical lines) in the top-right corner.
Navigate to Packages.
Tap the three vertical dots next to the package you want to modify.
Select Edit Package.
Under Speed Limits, enter speeds of your choice for example:
Upload: 2 Mbps
Download: 4 Mbps
Save your changes by clicking on Update Package.
Note: All speed values are measured in Mbps.
Why This Helps
Setting speed limits can help you manage peak bandwidth demand and reduce the likelihood of a small number of users consuming disproportionate amounts of bandwidth.
However, speed limits do not guarantee that your ISP will avoid applying FUP. Your total data consumption, ISP policy, and customer usage patterns still matter.
The goal is to manage your bandwidth more efficiently, not eliminate ISP restrictions entirely.
2. Set Individual Data Quotas for Your Vouchers
Another effective way to manage customer data consumption is by setting a data quota for your packages.
XenFi allows you to assign a specific data limit to a package. Every voucher generated under that package receives its own data allowance. This gives you greater control over how much data each customer can consume.
How to Set a Data Quota
Open your XenFi dashboard.
Tap the menu icon (three vertical lines) in the top-right corner.
Navigate to Packages.
Tap the three vertical dots next to your preferred package.
Select Edit Package.
Locate Data Limit.
Enter the amount of data you want to allocate.
Use the dropdown menu to select MB or GB.
Tap on Update Packages to apply the changes
Important: Your Voucher's Data Quota Does Not Reset
Each voucher generated under a package receives its own data allowance. Once that allowance is exhausted, the voucher cannot be reused, even if its validity period has not yet ended. For example, if a voucher has a 2 GB data limit and the customer consumes all 2 GB, attempting to use the same voucher again will display "Data Limit Quota Exceeded."
To receive another data allowance, the customer must purchase a new voucher. This helps hotspot owners establish clear data usage limits while preventing customers from repeatedly consuming data through the same voucher.
3. Add More MikroTik Routers to Distribute Your Hotspot Users
If you operate a large hotspot site with many connected users, relying on a single MikroTik router may create unnecessary pressure on your network infrastructure. This is where XenFi's Add Router feature becomes useful.
XenFi allows hotspot owners to add multiple MikroTik routers under one account, making it possible to distribute customers across different routers. Instead of managing your entire site through one device, you can organize your network across multiple MikroTik routers. Instead of managing your entire site through one device, you can organize your network across multiple MikroTik routers.
How to Add Another Router in XenFi
Follow these steps:
Open your XenFi dashboard.
Navigate to Settings.
Tap the dropdown menu.
Select Routers.
Tap the Add Router button at the top.
A new router will be created with its configuration files, including:
Use Remote Access to connect to the newly added router and proceed with its configuration. Ensure the router is correctly configured and connected to your hotspot network before assigning customers to it. If a router is created and not configured with XenFi, an orange warning light on the dashbaord wil be triggered.
How Multiple Routers Can Help Your Hotspot
Adding multiple MikroTik routers can provide several operational benefits:
1. Distribute Your Customers. You can spread connected users across multiple routers instead of concentrating them on one device.
2. Improve Network Scalability. As your hotspot grows, additional routers can provide more flexibility when expanding your infrastructure.
3. Reduce Dependence. If one router experiences a failure, other routers may continue serving their assigned customers, depending on your network design.
4. Simplify Network Expansion. You can add routers as your site grows rather than relying exclusively on a single device.
Use the Same XenFi Account Across Multiple Routers
One of the biggest advantages of adding multiple MikroTik routers is that your customers don't need different vouchers for each router. All the added routers are managed from the same XenFi account, and you can print and use the same vouchers across all the MikroTik routers connected to your account. This allows customers to move freely across the different routers while continuing to use the same XenFi voucher.
Author's Tip: For seamless roaming across your site, make sure all your access points use the exact same SSID name. Differences in SSID names can affect how customers move between access points.
Final Thoughts: Manage Your Data Before Your ISP Manages It for You
ISP data capping can create serious challenges for hotspot businesses, particularly those serving many customers. Although no XenFi feature can guarantee that your ISP will not apply FUP, you can take practical steps to manage your network more efficiently. By using:
Package Speed Limits to control bandwidth consumption.
Package Data Quotas to establish usage boundaries.
Multiple MikroTik Routers to distribute your network infrastructure.
You can build a more structured approach to managing your hotspot operations.
The objective is simple: serve your customers efficiently, monitor your data consumption, and make informed decisions before your ISP's limits affect your business.
