Critical MikroTik RouterOS & Hotspot Security Updates Available on XenFi. Secure Your Hotspot Now

What’s New on XenFi

Running a MikroTik hotspot on XenFi? Don’t ignore the “Critical Update” alert. XenFi now lets you update your MikroTik RouterOS directly from the XenFi platform and install an enhanced Hotspot Security and Reliability Update designed to strengthen hotspot authentication and help crack down on bypass attempts. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly where to find these updates, what to install first, and how to secure your hotspot in just a few steps. The best part? You can check for and install these updates directly from your XenFi dashboard without going through the usual manual RouterOS update process.

Here’s exactly what to do.

What Are the New XenFi Router Updates?

There are two updates you may see when a critical update is available for your router:

1. RouterOS Update

This updates your MikroTik router to the latest available RouterOS release provided through XenFi. Keeping RouterOS current helps ensure your router is running the latest available software improvements, fixes and compatibility updates.

2. Security and Reliability Update

This is the hotspot security update. It strengthens the security of your hotspot configuration and helps protect against users attempting to bypass hotspot authentication and access the network without proper authorization.

Important: These updates should be installed in the correct order.

Install the RouterOS update first, then install the Security and Reliability Update.

How to Update Your MikroTik Router from XenFi

Step 1: Open your XenFi dashboard

Log in to your XenFi account and open your dashboard.

Step 2: Go to Router Settings

From the dashboard:

Menu → Settings → Routers

You will see the MikroTik routers connected to your XenFi account.

Step 3: Look for “Critical Update”

If an update is available for a router, you will see a warning sign labelled:

Critical Update

Tap or click on it to see the available updates.

Step 4: Open “Router Updates”

A pop-up labelled Router Updates will appear.

You will see the available updates listed in two rows.

The first row is for the RouterOS update.

The second row is for the Security and Reliability Update.

Install the RouterOS Update First

Start with the first update. Click or tap the black:" Apply Update" button to get started and allow the update to complete. Do not interrupt the process while the router is being updated.

Depending on the router and connection, the update may take some time. Give it time to finish rather than repeatedly clicking the update button. Once the RouterOS update has successfully completed, move to the second update.

Then Install the Security and Reliability Update

After updating RouterOS, return to the Router Updates section, you should then install the second update labelled: "Security and Reliability Update", click or tap Apply Update and allow XenFi to complete the process.

This update is particularly important for hotspot operators because hotspot authentication is one of the areas attackers may target when trying to gain unauthorized access. Keeping the enhanced security settings installed gives your hotspot stronger protection against authentication-bypass attempts.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore the “Critical Update” Notice

A hotspot can appear to be working perfectly while its underlying software and security configuration are becoming outdated. Customers may still connect. Vouchers may still work. Your packages may still be selling. But that doesn't mean the router is running the latest available software or security configuration.

If XenFi is showing a Critical Update, take a few minutes to check what is available and bring the router up to date.

For hotspot owners, this is part of routine maintenance, not something to wait for until there is already a security problem.

Keep Your MikroTik Hotspot Updated

XenFi has made the process considerably simpler by bringing these updates into the platform. You don't have to start by manually downloading RouterOS packages and working through the update process in WinBox. Instead, you can check your connected routers directly from the XenFi dashboard and apply the available updates from there.

Remember the order:

1. RouterOS Update → 2. Security and Reliability Update

If your router is showing the Critical Update warning, don't leave it sitting there.

Update the RouterOS software first, then install the enhanced hotspot security update.

Stay Updated with XenFi
